Electro-Voice RE420 - Cardioid Condenser Vocal Microphone with Multi-Layered High-Pass and Pop Filter
The Electro-Voice RE420 is a handheld cardioid condenser microphone designed to capture vocals with great detail, clarity, and naturalness on stage and in recordings. Its back-electret capsule offers a wide response from 50 Hz to 20 kHz , with firm lows, present mids, and defined highs. It incorporates a switchable high-pass filter (150 Hz) to control vibrations and excessive proximity, a multi-layer pop filter (two foam layers separated by an air chamber) that reduces blowing and plosives, and an internal shock-mount that minimizes handling noise. With 200 Ω impedance and 3-pin XLR , it operates with 48 V DC phantom power and delivers 5.6 mV/Pa (-45 dBV/Pa) of sensitivity, 22 dB(A) self-noise , 127 dB dynamic range and 149 dB SPL clipping (1% THD) . The metal body (zamak) with a steel grille and black finish ensures durability on the road. Dimensions: 192 × 49.5 mm (length × head Ø); stem Ø 24.3 mm ; weight 326 g .
Main features
- Cardioid pattern with excellent isolation and a comfortable working area around the microphone; maximum feedback rejection at 180° off-axis.
- Switchable high-pass filter attenuates below 150 Hz to clean up the bass on stage.
- Multi-layer pop-filter to reduce plosives and air blasts without resorting to bulky external accessories.
- Internal suspension that decouples the capsule and reduces handling noise.
- Professional specifications : 50 Hz–20 kHz, 5.6 mV/Pa, 149 dB SPL clipping, 22 dB(A) self-noise, 200 Ω , 48 V phantom power.
- Robust construction : zinc alloy (zamak) body, steel grille and black polyurethane finish .
Product benefits
- Crisp, controlled vocals : The cardioid pattern and multi-layered anti-pop deliver clean mixes with high feedback control and minimal sibilance.
- Bass under control : activate the 150 Hz HPF to reduce stage rumble or proximity effect without losing vocal body.
- Less handling noise : Internal suspension and solid chassis reduce vibrations and shocks transmitted to the capsule.
- Instant integration : 200 Ω balanced XLR output and standard phantom power for connecting to any professional mixer or interface.
Use cases
- Solo singers and choirs looking for condenser detail with good isolation.
- Presenters , hosts and live events where intelligibility and ambient rejection are required.
- Theaters, places of worship , and rental companies with multiple simultaneous channels.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does it need power? Yes, it's a condenser microphone and requires phantom power (48V DC recommended).
- How do I position the floor monitor? For cardioid, position it 180° off-axis for maximum rejection.
- How does it differ from the RE520? The RE420 is cardioid ; the RE520 is supercardioid (tighter and with nulls around 125°/225°), which changes the isolation and mic technique.
