Electro-Voice RE20 Black - Variable-D Cardioid Dynamic Microphone for Broadcast and Vocals (Low-Reflection Carbon Black Finish)
The Electro-Voice RE20 Black is the low-reflection, charcoal black version of the classic RE20 voiceover microphone, the industry standard in broadcast, podcasting, voice-over , and professional sound reinforcement. Its patented Variable-D technology keeps the timbre stable and minimizes proximity effect, even when the speaker moves around the microphone. A high-capacity internal wind/pop filter and internal element suspension control breath noise and vibrations; the humbucking coil rejects EMI/electrical hum. With a 45 Hz–18 kHz response , 1.5 mV/Pa (−57 dBV/Pa) sensitivity , 150 Ω impedance , and a mid-bass shaping switch (~4.5 dB tilt between 400–100 Hz), the RE20 Black delivers smooth, natural, and controlled sound without the need for phantom power.
Main features
- EV's original Variable-D : stable cardioid pattern with minimal proximity effect and low off-axis coloration.
- Pop filter and internal transducer suspension : lower breath and handling noise.
- Humbucking coil : effective protection against line hum and magnetic interference.
- Mid-bass switch : progressively attenuates the bass to control proximity in vocals and instruments.
- Professional construction : Steel housing, length 216.7 mm , maximum diameter 54.4 mm , 737 g ; low-reflection carbon black finish.
- Standard connectivity : 3-pin XLR , 150 Ω , unpowered.
Product benefits
- Consistent, natural vocals in radio booths, podcast studios, and recording studios without a bass roll when approaching.
- Less pop, breath, and vibration artifacts thanks to the filter and internal suspension.
- Clean signal in environments with lights, transformers or screens due to its humbucking coil.
- Instant integration with any console/interface: low-impedance balanced output and foot clip included.
Use cases
- Professional broadcast/podcasting/voice-over .
- Instruments : bass drum, floor tom, bass, brass and guitar amps , maintaining transients and body.
- Direct : High-quality voice microphone in scenarios where rejection and naturalness are required.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does it need phantom power? No, it's dynamic .
- What effect does the bass switch have? It applies a roll-off slope (~4.5 dB between 400–100 Hz) to control the volume of close-range vocals.
- What accessories are recommended? 309A suspension for mechanical insulation and WSPL-2 foam for external wind protection.
