AKG C12 VR - Reference Multi-Pattern Tube Condenser Studio Microphone
The AKG C12 VR is a modern reimagining of the iconic C12, a studio tube condenser microphone with nine switchable polar patterns (from omnidirectional to figure-of-eight, with six positions in between) from its N 12 VR remote power supply. It combines the edge-terminated CK12 capsule with the select 6072A vacuum tube , delivering classic AKG character with 22 dB-A self-noise , 10 mV/Pa sensitivity , and a 30 Hz to 20 kHz response . It features -10/-20 dB pads and two switchable low-cut filters ( 100 Hz and 130 Hz ); sensitivity can also be boosted internally by +10 dB via microswitches on the electronic pickup itself. The set is completed with an H15/T shockmount , a 10 m multi-pin cable , a W42 windscreen , and a carrying case, all carefully manufactured in Vienna.
Main features
- Multi-pattern with remote control : 9 patterns (omni, cardioid, figure-eight and 6 intermediate) selectable on the N 12 VR.
- Classic Architecture : CK12 edge-tuned capsule and 6072A tube for a warm and detailed sound signature.
- Technical performance : 30 Hz–20 kHz; 10 mV/Pa ; 22 dB-A noise; SNR 72 dB-A ; impedance 200 Ω (recommended load ≥ 1 kΩ).
- Dynamics management : −10/−20 dB pads and 100/130 Hz filters with source control; internal +10 dB sensitivity boost with microswitches.
- Professional connectivity : microphone with 12-pin Tuchel connector on the N 12 VR; balanced XLR audio output at the source.
- Premium construction : green/gold finish, body Ø 42 mm × 225 mm , 680 g , handcrafted in Vienna.
- Includes : N 12 VR, 10 m multipin cable , H15/T (suspension), W42 (windshield) and hard case.
Product benefits
- True pickup versatility : nine patterns to adapt the pickup field to each voice, instrument and room without moving the microphone.
- Classic tube character with smooth transients and natural presence; ideal for lead vocals , brass , and electric guitars .
- Environment Control : 100/130 Hz filters reduce rumble and proximity; pads for high SPL sources.
- Easy studio integration : balanced XLR output from the source, dedicated 10m cable, and session-ready accessories.
Use cases
- Leading voices with presence and air characteristic of the C12 lineage.
- Brass sections (trumpet, sax, trombone) with brightness and leakage control using the appropriate pattern.
- Electric (amps) and acoustic guitar with filters/pads to adjust proximity and dynamics.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you select the polar pattern? From the N 12 VR , which also allows you to switch the pad and bass filter.
What is the "+10 dB" sensitivity? It's an internal sensitivity boost (not at the source) that can be activated with microswitches inside the microphone.
How do I connect it? The microphone connects to the N 12 VR via a 12-pin cable ( 10 m cable included). The N 12 VR outputs to the mixer/preamp using a balanced XLR connector .
