Electro-Voice RE27N/D - Variable-D cardioid dynamic microphone with neodymium capsule, humbucking coil, and 3 switchable filters
The Electro-Voice RE27N/D is a professional cardioid dynamic microphone designed for broadcast, podcasting, voiceovers , and close-miking instruments. It features EV's Variable-D technology to minimize proximity effect and maintain a consistent low end even with varying distances from the capsule. Its neodymium- magnet transducer delivers higher output and a tighter response, while the humbucking coil reduces EMI hum. It features three switchable tone-shaping filters (two low-cut and one high-cut ) that allow you to tailor the microphone's character to your voice or source without the need for external EQ. The design includes internal windscreens and pop filters and a satin-nickel -plated steel construction for heavy-duty studio and live use.
It offers a response of 45 Hz – 20 kHz , impedance 150 Ω and open circuit voltage 2.5 mV/Pa , with a length of 217 mm , maximum diameter 54 mm and approximate weight 709 g . 3-pin XLR connection. Compatible with accessories such as the 309A suspension and the WSPL-2 foam for voice or outdoor applications.
Main features
- Variable-D Technology : Proximity effect control for consistent bass on both vocals and instruments.
- Dynamic capsule with neodymium magnet : greater sensitivity and detail compared to traditional designs.
- 3 switchable voice-shaping filters: two low-cuts (one steep at 200 Hz and one with a soft roll-off) and a high-cut to tame the presence when needed.
- Humbucking coil : excellent rejection of mains hum and interference from lighting and equipment.
- True cardioid pattern with maximum rejection at 180° , useful for reducing feedback and room noise.
- Integrated anti-plosives and steel chassis with a durable satin nickel finish.
- Key specifications : 45 Hz–20 kHz, 150 Ω, 2.5 mV/Pa (OCV), XLR-3, 217 × 54 mm, ≈709 g .
Product benefits
- Clear and controlled voice without excessive variations when moving in front of the microphone thanks to Variable-D.
- Instant sonic flexibility : Adjust bass and presence with three switches to suit different voices, cabinets, or instruments.
- Cleaner signal : humbucking against hum and internal filters that reduce pops and blow-by.
- Professional Integration : Low impedance balanced output (200/150 Ω nominal), XLR standard and rugged construction for daily use.
Use cases
- Broadcast and podcast with lead and voice-over voices, featuring presence and articulation.
- Studio and live : bass drum, bass, brass, guitars and percussion that require punch without losing control.
- Radio booths and studios with nearby equipment: effective hum rejection thanks to its humbucking coil.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it dynamic or condenser? It is dynamic ; it doesn't need phantom power.
- What do the three switches do? Two apply bass cut (one steep at 200 Hz and one soft); the third applies treble cut to soften the presence.
- How does it compare to the RE20? The RE27N/D offers more output and a brighter character thanks to its neodymium magnet; both share Variable-D and a uniform cardioid pattern.
- What accessories do you recommend? 309A suspension for mechanical isolation and WSPL-2 foam for wind/plosives.
