MuxLab 500701-2PK - Kit of 2 Passive HD-SDI Baluns for Transmission over UTP
Optimize your professional video and security installations with the MuxLab 500701-2PK , a high-performance signal extender system designed to transmit high-definition SDI digital video over standard structured cabling (Cat5e or Cat6). This kit, consisting of two reversible transmitter and receiver units, eliminates reliance on expensive and bulky coaxial cables, allowing you to leverage your existing network infrastructure or deploy much more economical and manageable UTP cabling.
Engineered for reliability: Each balun features a die-cast aluminum chassis that not only provides exceptional ruggedness for field work but also acts as a crucial shield against electromagnetic (EMI) and radio frequency (RFI) interference. Its passive design means it requires no external power supply, dramatically simplifying installation in hard-to-reach places, behind racks, or on ceilings.
It is the ideal solution for broadcast engineers, CCTV technicians and audiovisual professionals who need to connect HD-SDI equipment (such as cameras, monitors, switchers and recorders) point to point while maintaining the integrity of the uncompressed digital signal.
Main features
- Transmission Versatility: Converts impedance from 75 ohms (BNC coaxial) to 100 ohms (RJ45 twisted pair) without perceptible loss.
- Multi-Resolution Support: Fully compatible with SD-SDI (Standard Definition) and HD-SDI (High Definition 720p/1080i) signals.
- Passive Design: It does not require batteries or power adapters; it works using the energy of the video signal itself.
- Industrial Construction: Cast aluminum metal casing for maximum durability and shielding.
- Full Signal: Supports uncompressed and unencrypted digital video transmission, including embedded audio and timecode.
- Compact Form Factor: Its small size allows it to be connected directly to the BNC ports of the equipment without blocking adjacent inputs in most cases.
Benefits of the system
- Cost Savings: Cat5e/Cat6 cable is significantly cheaper per meter than broadcast-grade coaxial cable (such as RG6 or RG59).
- Ease of Installation: UTP cable is lighter, more flexible, and easier to pull through narrow conduits than rigid coaxial cable.
- Unified Infrastructure: Allows the use of surplus or pre-installed network cabling in smart buildings to send dedicated video signals.
- Portability: Ideal for rental and live event companies that need lightweight ("throw-down") solutions that can withstand daily abuse.
Use cases
- Television and Broadcast Studios: Connection of reference monitors and cameras on sets.
- Security and Video Surveillance (HD-CCTV): Upgrading analog systems to digital using existing UTP cabling.
- Live Events and Mobile Units (OB Vans): Rapid deployment of video lines at concerts or conferences.
- Post-production: Links between editing rooms and server rooms.
- Medical Imaging: High-quality video transmission in operating rooms and diagnostic rooms.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need to connect the baluns to the electrical current?
No, the MuxLab 500701-2PK is completely passive and does not require an external power supply. -
What is the maximum actual distance I can reach?
The distance depends on the resolution and cable type. For SD-SDI signals, it can reach up to 100-120 meters with Cat5e. For HD-SDI signals (720p/1080i), the recommended distance is up to 45 meters with good quality Cat5e or Cat6 cable. -
Does it work with Cat6 cable or only Cat5e?
It works perfectly with both. Cat6 cable typically offers marginally better performance and greater physical robustness, but Cat5e is sufficient to meet specifications. -
Does the kit include both sides?
Yes, reference 500701-2PK includes two identical units that function as both transmitter and receiver (bidirectional). -
Does it support 3G-SDI (1080p 60Hz)?
This model is optimized for SD and HD-SDI (up to 1.5 Gbps). For 3G-SDI, the range is drastically reduced in passive mode, so it is recommended primarily for HD (1080i/720p) or SD applications.
Project description
