OSRAM HSD 250/80 4ArXS GY9.5 – 250W, 8000K, 17000lm Metal Discharge Lamp for Show and Architectural Lighting
The OSRAM HSD 250/80 4ArXS is a short-arc metal halide discharge lamp with a GY9.5 base , designed for projectors, moving heads, and entertainment and architectural lighting fixtures. Its 4ArXS (For Architainment eXtreme Seal) technology allows the outer bulb seal to withstand temperatures up to 450°C , resulting in an average lifespan of up to 3,000 hours when operated with electronic lighting control (ECG). It offers a luminous flux of 17,000 lm , a color temperature of 8,000 K , and a CRI of 85. Its single-ended design and quartz housing facilitate handling and integration into compact luminaires. It is a cold-start lamp (non-hot restrike) that requires forced ventilation and use in enclosed luminaires with UV filtering .
Main features
- Power and voltage: 250 W, 92 V nominal (typical lamp voltage 95 V), 2.8 A , AC current.
- Optics: 17,000 lm , 8,000 K , CRI 85 , short arc for high luminance and defined beams.
- 4ArXS construction: quartz outer bulb and extreme seal resistant up to 450 °C , greater thermal and mechanical robustness.
- Lamp dimensions: length 108 mm , diameter 23 mm , LCL 55 mm , weight 31.6 g .
- Base: GY9.5 (2 pin, prefocus); single-ended lamp.
- Half-life: 3,000 h (with ECG).
- Safety: Use only in enclosed luminaires with UV filtering; contains mercury (Hg).
- Cooling: by assisted convection ( fan recommended).
Product benefits
- High performance per watt: high efficiency (up to ~90 lm/W) and 8,000 K “cool white” color for sharp cuts and high-impact effects.
- Reliability on rigs and tours: Robust 4ArXS design withstands extreme pinch temperatures and reduces premature failures.
- Easy integration: GY9.5 format and standard dimensions (LCL 55 mm) widely adopted in entertainment luminaires.
- Long service life: up to 3,000 h when operated with suitable electronic ballast.
Use cases
- Entertainment: moving heads, effects projectors, cutouts, PC/Fresnel on stages, clubs and events.
- Architecture and exterior: gobo projection, facades, mapping and luminous signage in controlled environments.
- Rental and touring: applications that demand photometric stability, quick replacements and thermal robustness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need control equipment (ballast)?
Yes. It is a discharge lamp and must be operated with an HSD 250/80 compatible ballast/ECG .
Does it support hot restarts?
No. It requires a cold start ; after being switched off, it must cool down before being restarted.
Can it be used in open luminaires?
No. It must be used in enclosed luminaires with UV filtering, due to its high luminance, UV radiation and internal pressure.
What are the differences between HSD 250/60 and HSD 250/80?
Mainly the color temperature (≈6,000 K at 250/60 vs ≈8,000 K at 250/80) and the nominal voltage.
Installation and safety notes
- Respect polarity, distance and centering (LCL 55 mm) when mounting the lamp.
- Ensure forced ventilation in the light fixture and prevent heat buildup around the seal.
- Operate only with a suitable ECG and within the specified electrical parameters.
- Handle with gloves; do not touch the glass. Contains mercury (Hg) : manage as hazardous waste at the end of its useful life.
