Electro-Voice ND66 - Cardioid condenser instrument microphone with pivoting head, switchable pads and high-pass filter

The Electro-Voice ND66 is a cardioid (self-polarized) condenser instrument microphone designed to accurately capture the articulation and transients of drums, percussion, strings, and piano. Its unique locking, swiveling headshell allows the capsule to be angled with the push of a button and locked at the optimal angle without moving the foot, speeding up positioning in complex sets. It features two selectable pads ( -10 dB and -20 dB ) to prevent overloading on very loud sources, and two switchable high-pass filters ( 75 Hz and 150 Hz ) help control low-frequency rumble and room resonances. With a response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz , a maximum of 146 dB SPL and 20 dB(A) self-noise , it delivers clean, crisp, and detailed sound in the studio and on stage. It requires 48 V DC phantom power and connects via a 3-pin XLR .

Main features

  • Pivoting head with lock : precisely orients the capsule and locks the angle without repositioning the mount.
  • Two selectable pads : −10 dB and −20 dB to prevent clipping of the preamp or capsule on high SPL sources.
  • Two high-pass filters : 75 Hz and 150 Hz to reduce rumble , vibrations and proximity.
  • Small diaphragm (back-electret) capsule : fast transient capture and high tonal definition.
  • Professional specifications : 50 Hz–20 kHz , 10 mV/Pa , max. 146 dB SPL , S/N 74 dB , impedance 200 Ω .
  • Robust construction : zamak (die-cast zinc) body with black polyurethane finish .
  • Includes clamp, European thread adapter and case .

Product benefits

  • Fast and precise placement even in tight spaces (overheads, hi-hats, inside the piano harp).
  • Clean and controlled signal thanks to HPF filters and switchable pads, with less need for EQ and dynamics.
  • True versatility : from cymbals and snares to acoustic guitars and strings, while maintaining detail and naturalness.
  • Immediate compatibility with any professional mixer/interface: balanced XLR, 200 Ω and standard phantom.

Use cases

  • Drum and hi-hat overheads , with excellent cymbal definition.
  • Snare drum (up/down), toms and minor percussion.
  • Acoustic guitar , piano , strings and woodwinds in studio and live.
  • Close room ambience with bass control via HPF.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it dynamic or condenser? It's a condenser (self-biased) and requires 48 V DC phantom power .
  • What do pads and HPFs do? The pads (−10/−20 dB) prevent overloads on loud sources; the HPFs (75/150 Hz) attenuate noise and proximity.
  • Does the pivoting head move on its own? No. It unlocks by pressing , orients itself, and locks into that position when released.
  • What accessories does it include? Foot clamp, European thread adapter , and case .
